Following the self-titled debut album, which was essentially a Dave Grohl solo effort, The Colour And The Shape was the first released with a band called Foo Fighters. As a follow-up, this album shows a lot of refinement, and a more consistent voice.
Two of the stand-out tracks, "Monkey Wrench" and "Everlong" were the appropriately-selected first two singles. Each of these are showcases of the band's ability to create accessible, radio-friendly songs without compromising the grittiness that makes up much of the band's identity. The scream at the end of the bridge of "Monkey Wrench" is a perfect musical climax.
The other song that stood out for me was "See You." I always love when bands try something new and are still good at it. In this case, it's in the form of a jaunty acoustic track that sounds unlike anything Foo Fighters have done before. It lets off a little steam, letting the band, and listeners have a little fun.
