After mostly enjoying Doolittle, I was hoping Bossanova would put me over the edge, maybe even turning me into a full-blown Pixies fan. "Cecilia Ann" was a pretty good start, as an instrumental track that would serve as an equally good introduction to a bad 70's action movie. It wasn't until four tracks later that "Is She Weird" struck me as another track worth re-listening. Its creepiness and eventual descent into howling madness are intriguing to say the least.
"Dig For Fire" is more of a rounded-up 3.5 star song. The instrumentals are catchy, but the vocals don't quite live up to the standard the walking guitar and bass parts. "The Happening" got a 3-star the first time, but after a second listening got bumped up to a 4, with the truth lying somewhere in between. There are elements of the song that are interesting (like the talk-singing near the end), but as a whole, the parts don't come into a single consistently enjoyable piece of music. Which, as it turns out, is something of a microcosm for the whole album. There are bits, here and there, that stand out, but not as wholly captivating as Doolittle was.
