Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - The Boatman's Call

If you like spiritual imagery spoke-sung by a voice that you would listen to read the ingredient off of a box of Pop Tarts, then The Boatman's Call may very well be right up your alley. There may not be much in the way of melodic variety here, but if one were to describe it as monotony, one would have to at least say it's a bold monotony that still resonates.

The whole thing kicks off with "Into Your Arms," a romantic pseudo-spiritual song that focuses its faith away from "God" and toward the recipient of his affections.

Sometimes it's the poetry of the song that sucks you in. Such is the case with nearly all 5:46 of "Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?" One such memorable line being: "In a colonial hotel, we fucked up the sun / then we fucked it down again."

Although the album is heavy on electric organ and slow snare, there is some musical variety. The best example is "West Country Girl," a song more notable for its gritty fiddle/guitar than weird-as-hell lyrics.

And, to end it off you've got "Green Eyes." With one mournful singing vocal track cantoring over a narration of the lyrics, the result is a memorable, if not always aesthetically pleasing experience.
