The Stooges - Fun House

Fun House is not something that I was able to get into right away. "Down On The Street" and "Loose" seemed like noise. It wasn't until the more straight-forward "T.V. Eye" that I started to feel like I had a grasp on what was going on.

Then, with "Dirt," I realized just how good this album was going to be. Gritty, fabulous, and epic, the 7:04 song is the kind of music that is best experienced at home, comfortable, with full-on head phones, so that you can experience every sound that comes at you.

The next two tracks, "1970" and "Fun House" are jams that don't shy away from screaming. The best part of "1970" comes at 3:31, with a howling sax solo, while "Fun House"'s screaming is intense, to say the least. For me, the song loses something at 5:52, when it starts to sound like a Muppet is screaming for attention in front of a late night talk show backing band.

The final tracks, "L.A. Blues" is a tasty blending of genres, with a free jazz sax being mashed together with whatever label you want to attach to The Stooges' garage/proto-punk/hard rock aesthetic.

Rating: 3.7 stars
