At their best, DMB presents songs that are catchy but also challenging in their unwillingness to slide into standard song structures. The loose approach they take gives the feeling that they are simply doing what they want to do, and if that includes repeating a catchy chorus every so often then so be it. I will be the first person to admit that this jamming style can be kind of intimidating to critique, because of its intimate and intangible nature, but putting that aside, it still comes out with some great songs.
At their worst, DMB is competent without being engaging. There are occasions where the songs weigh too heavily on the saxophone, resulting in tracks that wouldn't sound altogether out of place in the opening credits of a daytime soap opera. As a former "General Hospital" junkie, there are worse things I could say about a band.
