Final Fantasy has such a brave, distinct sound, that it's bound to be a hit-or-miss experience. Sometimes it clicks, when the strings/synth/brass/drums and vocals seem to be all on the same page. Other times, it's a still listenable, less enjoyable mess.

"This Is The Dream Of Win And Regine" is gripping at first, with its distinct violin riff. Other flavours of sound are icing on the cake, and there's a great climax around 2:56 where the vocals just yell.

"The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead" has a darker sounding intro, with more of a speech-singing vocal part. It gets more points for overall tone than individual brilliances.

"Took You Two Years To Win My Heart" is lyrically engaging. I can't say "no" to a song with lines like "They say heartbreak is good for the skin, but all that it's helped is my drinking."

"Adventure.exe" is what you would get if Matt Nathanson collaborated with Simon & Garfunkel.

"An Arrow In The Side Of Final Fantasy" is a bouncy tune whose success hinges greatly on the violin part.

"Please Please Please" is a frustrated track, complete with screaming backing vocals. It also has a cool rhythmic sequence acting as a sort of chorus.

  1. I adore this album... Owen Pallett gives a really interesting live experience too, if you haven't seen him yet, he usually plays LOLA in Vic park
