"Gloria" sets the tone right away with its confrontational opening line: "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine." It starts off reflective but then speeds up around the 2:00-mark, which is when it really grabs you.
"Birdland" first got my attention because its piano part sounds like the love theme from King's Quest VI. That has nothing to do with how good the song is, it just made me nostalgic. It's Smith's poetry and imagery that make this song stand out.
"Kimberly" isn't the strongest track, but it doesn't suck. It's getting late and I don't know what else to day about it.
"Break It Up" takes you along for an escalating ride that ends up where the title suggests: Smith howling until her voice can't take anymore.
"Land"'s frenetic speaking grabs your right away and doesn't let go. Its three parts are enjoyable, although the "Land Of A Thousand Dances" portion reminds me of "Shake A Tail Feather" from The Blues Brothers. Again, that's critically irrelevent, but, then again, if you didn't want to know what I was thinking, you wouldn't be reading this. Probably what's most notable about this track is that despite its 9:26 length, it keeps your interest till the very end.
