Axis: Bold As Love doesn't start off how I'd normally like my albums to. Sure, "EXP" has this whole psychedelic extra-terrestrial thing going on, but it's brutally dissonant, chaotic, and, unless you're in the right frame of mind (ie. stoned out of your tree) it'll make you kind of irritable.
A little further in, you start to get to the real gems, like "Spanish Castle Magic" and "If 6 Was 9." These tracks, and most of the other 4-stars, combine bizarre verbage with slick riffs, without causing the kind of anxiety that "EXP" does.
While the great song:okay song ratio isn't as high as it is with the earlier Are You Experienced?, this album demonstrates that Hendrix, even when not on his A+ game, was still better than nearly anyone.
