Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
The beginning seems like a fine enough place to start, so let's start there. Cosmo's Factory begins with the groovy, impressive "Ramble Tamble," which showcases enough musical diversity to make its 7+ minutes pass in a flash.
Not everything on the album sounds as important as the opener, but even then you can generally count on John Fogerty's astounding vocals to get you through. Even if "Travelin' Band" isn't a particularly great song, hearing the emphasis and strain that Fogerty puts on its vocals is enough to make it remarkable.
And then, sometimes, you make "Ooby Dooby," much in the same musical boat as "Travelin' Band" but with nonsense syllables instead of intensity.
It took a few times before "Lookin' Out My Back Door" started to travel from "okay" to "awesome." But, even only having heard the song three times, it feels substantially more familiar than it should, largely thanks to its folksy, almost child-like accessibility.
For my money (except for the irritating pronunciation of the word "heard"), "I Heard It Through The Grape Vine," is far and away the best track on the album. It escalates from groovy to a feeling of preferential treatment for being given access to a CCR jam session as you make your way through this 11 minute epic.
