The Doors - The Doors

Boom. Right out of the gate you've got "Break On Through (To The Other Side)," an immediately immersive and addictive song the secretes recklessness and energy. Alright, maybe I'm overdoing it with the prose here, but I'm trying to come up with things to say that don't focus on being kind of disappointed with The Doors' self-titled debut album. It's not that it's a bad record; that would be crazy talk. It's just that L.A. Woman is so good, and The Doors is supposed to be just that much better, but here I am, trying to figure out what the big deal is.

The best song, I figure, is "The Crystal Ship," with its fantastic establishment of its creepy mood, climaxing at around the 2-minute mark.

Next of note is "Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)," whose creepy, carnivalesque music is cancelled out by its simple, hobbling lyrics.

The whole thing wraps up with "The End," which is incredible during its moments of escalation, although it does hit some rough, more pedantic patches. By the end, when Morrison is screaming all lustily about his Oedipal mother, you have no choice but to be swept up in the chaos and energy of the music.
