Wide Open Spaces, the first Dixie Chicks (I refuse to acknowledge the DCX abbreviaton) album released with singer Natalie Maines is a country album. I know that goes without saying, but this album is you come to expect, and generally make fun of, when you are talking about country music. Track after track recounts the tales of woe of a jilted lover who ends up being disappointed by relationships that seem to have intention of infidelity as a prerequisite.

Some of the songs are just bad, "You Were Mine" and "Once You've Loved Somebody" being the worst. These are dull tracks, so rife with cliche and weak lyricism, that you wonder how they ever around to making Fly.

Most of the rest of the album is disposable country ballads. Listening to some of them a second time around, they didn't even sound familiar because of how quickly they went in one ear and out the other.

The one redeeming track, "There's Your Trouble" stands out because of its intriguing, syncopated verses and catchy chorus.

Some may find it interesting to check this album out to see how the Dixie Chicks got started, but I'd say that where they ended up is much more important.
